A Bit of History about International Harvester…
The International Harvester Company was a U.S. manufacturer of agricultural machinery, construction equipment, trucks, and household and commercial products. In 1902, J.P. Morgan combined the McCormick Harvester Machine Company, and Deering Harvester Company, along with three smaller agricultural equipment firms, to form International Harvester. Then, in 1985 International Harvester sold a certain selection of assets of the agricultural division to Tenneco Inc, who merged it with its subsidiary J.I. Case, which formed, Case IH. With following terms of IH’s agreement with Tenneco, International Harvester renamed themselves, in 1986, as Navistar International Corporation. All the way back to the beginning, which run back to the 1830’s, Cyrus Hall McCormick, an inventor in Virginia, finalized his version of a horse-drawn reaper; he had field demonstrated it throughout 1831, and received a patent in 1834. In 1847 McCormick then moved to Chicago, and started the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company; and the McCormick Reaper sold very well. McCormick passed in 1885, and gave his company to his son; Cyrus McCormick Jr. In 1919, the Parlin and Orendorff Factory in Canton, Illinois, was a leader in the plow manufacturing industry. International Harvester purchased the factory calling it Canton Works, and continued production for many decades. In 1926 IH’s Farmall Works, began production at a new plant in Rock Island, Illinois, and built mainly to produce the new Farmall tractor. The 100,000th Farmall was produced by 1930. IH enjoyed a sales lead in tractors and related equipment that continued through the 1940’s and 1950’s, despite the stiff competition from Ford, John Deere, and many others. Their down fall was then in 1979, when IH named a new CEO and they thought they were going to cut down on ballooning costs and improve margins; instead, unprofitable models were discontinued and factory production curtailed. |
